Frequently Asked Questions

The nexus is what we would called in the UK as a threshold. When you have a Nexus it means you fulfil the criteria in that state to register for the state sales tax. This is different across all states so you need to know the rules to make sure you are compliant.

In the US, Amazon deals with the sales tax on behalf of the seller and buyer, therefore you do not need to register for state sales taxes in the US. This makes it one of the easiest markets to enter.

You will need to monitor the nexus in each state to determine if you meet the volume of transactions or total sales amount to register for state sale tax.

If you send goods from the UK to the EU then you DON’T have to register for EU VAT. However, your customer will be charged VAT when they receive the item. So you have a couple of options. Register for IOSS, which is a simplified return for those importing into the EU.

The other option is paying the duty upfront when you send the item.

You need to register for EU taxes as soon as you store your goods in Europe. For example, if you sell in Germany you will most likely need to register for German VAT, Polish VAT and Czech VAT. This is because Amazon have fulfilment centres in those countries serving the German market.

That’s why we recommend choosing one country at a time to make sure that you are able to generate sales which cover the admin costs of VAT registration.
